Falls High School Library Update
By: Isabelle Hemstad

Covid-19 has changed a lot of things this year; school is different, work is different, even going to the grocery store is different.  Earlier in the week I interviewed the Falls High School librarian about how the coronavirus has affected what she does on a day-to-day basis.

Brenda Hjelle has been working extra hard this year to enable students to be able to browse, check out, and pick up books.  Normally this wouldn’t be such a daunting task but thanks to covid-19, only twelve students are allowed in the library at a time and if a student touches a book, it has to be disinfected and sit, undisturbed, for three days.  This makes it very hard for students to be able to just walk into the library, pick up books, read the back, and then put them back on the shelf, as they usually would.

Mrs. Hjelle has thought of a way to make it possible for students to still be able to browse through the wide variety of books held in the school library, safely.  The solution?  Online book lists.  Every week she compiles a list of 40-80 books, writing down the author, short description, AR level, etc.  She sends those lists out to the English teachers, who can then pass them on to students.  As for picking up books, you can have them brought to your English class, pick them up in the library, or for full distance learners: they can be picked up in the main office.  Once they are returned, they will sit on a shelf for three days, before someone else can check it out.

Thank you so much to Mrs. Hjelle for making this possible during a time when we need books the most!!!
